Formulas for Combining Scaled Scores of Test Sections

  • For the World Language tests with a multiple-choice (MC) section and a constructed-response (CR) section (Spanish, French, and German) and Latin)
  • Total scaled score = (MC section 1 scaled score) (MC section 1 nominal weight) + (CR section 2 scaled score) (CR section 2 nominal weight)
  • The result is rounded to the nearest integer.
  • Example: An examinee that achieved a scaled score of 220 on the multiple-choice section and a scaled score of 260 on the constructed-response item section would receive a total test scaled score of 228, calculated as follows:
    Total test scaled score
    = (.8 * times  220) + (.2 * times  260)
    = 176 + 52
    = 228
For the World Language tests with a multiple-choice section and 4 constructed-response (CR) sections (Chinese [Mandarin], Arabic [Modern Standard], Russian, and Japanese)
  • Total scaled score = (MC section scaled score) (MC section nominal weight)
+ (CR section 1 scaled score) (CR section 1 nominal weight)
+ (CR section 2 scaled score) (CR section 2 nominal weight)
+ (CR section 3 scaled score) (CR section 3 nominal weight)
+ (CR section 4 scaled score) (CR section 4 nominal weight)
  • The result is rounded to the nearest integer.
  • Example: An examinee that achieved a scaled score of 220 on the multiple-choice section and a scaled score of 260, 250, 240, and 230 on the four constructed-response item sections would receive a total test scaled score of XXX, calculated as follows:
    Total test scaled score
    = (.35 * times  220) + (.2 * times  260) + (.15 * times  250) + (.15 * times  240) + (.15 * times  230)
    = 77 + 52 + 37.5 + 36 + 34.5
    = 237
