Professional Readiness Examination to Replace the Basic Skills Test
What is the Professional Readiness Examination?
Beginning in October 2013, the Professional Readiness Examination will replace the Basic Skills test. The Professional Readiness Examination consists of the following subtests:
- Reading
- Mathematics
- Writing
What if I have already taken and passed one of the MTTC Basic Skills subtests?
If you have previously passed one or more Basic Skills (096) subtests, your passing status for each subtest you passed will be accepted and you will only need to take and pass any subtest(s) you have not yet passed.
What preparation materials are available for the Professional Readiness Examination?
The following preparation materials are available at no cost. Select “Prepare” on the MTTC Web site.

In addition, in August 2013 a full-length practice test for each subtest will be available for a fee.
New Elementary Education Test
A new Elementary Education test (103) (formerly referred to on the Web site as Elementary Education tests 103 and 104) will be administered beginning in October 2013, replacing the current Elementary Education test (083). The new Elementary Education test (103) consists of 150 multiple-choice questions in the content areas of:
- English Language Arts and World Languages
- Social Studies
- Visual and Performing Arts
- Mathematics
- Science
- Health and Physical Education

A U.S. Social Security Number Is Required for MTTC Registration
As of December 7, 2010, you must provide a valid U.S. social security number to register for the MTTC. Canadian social insurance numbers are no longer accepted. If you do not have a valid U.S. social security number, you must obtain a nine-digit Office of Professional Preparation Services (OPPS) number in order to complete your registration. An OPPS registration number may be obtained by calling (517) 335-1151.
Early Childhood Education (General and Special Education) Test
Beginning in October 2012, the Early Childhood Education (General and Special Education) test (106) will be available. It is replacing the Early Childhood Education test (082). The first administration of the new test is October 13, 2012. The last administration of the older test is July 14, 2012.
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) endorsement areas and codes are available for examinee reference on the MDE Web site at

The two-letter endorsement code corresponding to an MTTC test appears next to that test in "Test Selection."
Be sure you are taking the correct test for your endorsement. If you need assistance determining your endorsement or the test you should take, contact your advisor or the certification officer at your institution.
Computer-Based Testing
Effective December 2012, computer-based testing will be available for Early Childhood Education (General and Special Education), Language Arts (Elementary), English, and Integrated Science (Elementary) tests. (Paper-based tests for these fields will continue to be offered.) Computer-based testing (CBT) for these and other CBT tests is available during select six-day testing windows at Pearson Professional Centers in Michigan and across the nation. Refer to "Test Dates for Computer-Based Testing" for a list of the testing windows currently open for registration.
Registration for computer-based testing is available only on the Internet by selecting "Register Now" on the MTTC Web site. The fees for computer-based testing differ from fees for paper-based testing. See "Test Fees and Payment Policies for Computer-Based Testing" for complete test and registration fees.
